Vendakka Paal Curry

Vendakka paal curry is a mildly spiced, delicious Kerala dish prepared by cooking okra with coconut
milk and spices. It is a quick and easy curry that goes well with rice, roti or appam.


  • 20 okra, washed and cut into 2 inch pieces
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup thick coconut milk
  • 2 cups thin coconut milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder (or as per taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 3 green chillies, vertically slit
  • 1 piece ginger, inch long, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons coconut oil


  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 shallots, round sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon oil


  • Oil fry okra until slightly wilted. Keep aside
  • Add and fry sliced onions, ginger and green chillies until translucent.
  • Add curry leaves, okra, turmeric powder and chilli powder and sauté.
  • Add thin coconut milk and salt. Cover the pan and cook for 4-5 mins.
  • Add lemon juice and thick coconut milk. Stir well and stop flame.
  • Prepare a tempering with mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, shallots, curry leaves and pour it over
  • the curry.
  • Serve vendakka paal curry warm with rice, roti or appam.
